Amp.
Build and check code in a small cloud workspace.
Amp works on software tasks in a browser, terminal or native app. Each cloud task has its own computer, called an orb. Its coordinator, Puck, helps organize work inside Amp. You can also supply your own runner. Model use and computer time have separate costs.
Getting started: TechnicalChoose a model payment route and a project. Check tool access and cloud-machine costs. You need to review code, commands and tests; tools do not ask for approval by default. Our setup guide, not a performance score.
Good for
Developers who want separate coding workspaces and can inspect changes and costs. It takes software knowledge and is not a household assistant.
Start with
An Amp account, a project you can review and a supported model payment route. Cloud computers need a compute budget; your own runner needs hardware and power. Connected services need their own access and permissions.
Cost
Hobby has no platform fee. It does not promise a continuing free AI allowance or free cloud computer. Megawatt is $20/month with $20 model credit and 45,000 small-orb minutes. Gigawatt is $200 with $200 model credit and 480,000 minutes. Extra usage costs more.
Plans and limits explainedOne platform, two usage budgets.
- Free plan
- Hobby has no platform fee. It needs a model payment route and either paid cloud compute or your own runner. No current numeric ongoing free AI or cloud grant is confirmed for a new user. The old $10/day Amp Free article is not today’s Hobby promise. Free-platform card rules remain unconfirmed.
- Trial not confirmed
- No general current trial duration, numeric allowance, card rule or conversion is confirmed. Eligible teachers and students can apply for $10/month Megawatt with $10 model usage and 45,000 small-orb minutes. This is a paid education offer, not a universal free trial.
- Paid plans
- Megawatt is $20/month per member with $20 model credit and 45,000 small-orb-equivalent minutes; Gigawatt is $200 with $200 model credit and 480,000 minutes. Included balances reset monthly without rollover. Canceling stops the next renewal; the current allowance lasts to term end. No general annual invoice is confirmed. Teams add no workspace platform fee; SSO needs one paid member. Enterprise is quoted.
- Extra costs & limits
- Managed model calls for non-enterprise accounts use provider API list rates without Amp markup; other tools can spend credit. Bought credit lasts 12 months. Cloud computers cost $0.08–$2.13/hour by size, billed by the awake minute; paused time is free. Larger computers use included minutes faster. Amp documents specific ChatGPT/token-sharing and Claude Code Pro/Max routes. Their limits still apply; uncovered model roles can charge Amp credit and cloud remains separate. Own hardware, outside services and tax add costs. Top-up defaults and minimum purchase are unconfirmed.
Prices in USD unless noted. Check the billing period; local prices, taxes and offers can differ.

Plan details
Model credit pays for AI work. Orb minutes pay for a cloud computer. An existing AI subscription does not cover every model or cloud charge.
- Hobby platform$0 platform fee · usage separate
- Choose your own model route and either paid cloud compute or your own runner. No current guaranteed numeric free model grant is confirmed for a new user. The old $10/day Amp Free article does not establish today’s Hobby allowance. Card rules, a general free trial and a minimum credit purchase are unconfirmed.
- Megawatt and Gigawatt$20 or $200 / month
- Megawatt includes $20 model credit and 45,000 a1.small-equivalent orb minutes each month. Gigawatt includes $200 model credit and 480,000 equivalent minutes. Larger machines use the allowance faster. Included balances reset monthly without rollover. Plans renew until canceled; canceling stops the next renewal, with the current allowance available to cycle end. No general annual plan is confirmed.
- Cloud time beyond allowances$0.08 to $2.13 / hour
- Tiny is $0.08/hour, small $0.17, medium $0.33, large $0.66, xxlarge $1.32 and 3xlarge $2.13. Awake time is billed by the minute; paused computers cost nothing. 3xlarge needs Gigawatt or Enterprise. Automatic pause waits for both five minutes without agent work and twenty minutes without user interaction. Opening a thread or an automation can wake it; archive the thread to stop it. Orb Saver can prevent a simple thread view from waking it.
- Model credit and existing plansUsage or an eligible existing plan
- Managed model calls for individuals and non-enterprise teams use provider API list prices without Amp markup. Some other tools also spend credit. Bought credits expire after 12 months. Amp documents a ChatGPT sign-in route with token sharing, and a separate Claude Code mode for eligible Pro/Max plans. Their limits still apply. Other model roles can charge Amp credit; neither route includes cloud time. Automatic top-up defaults are unconfirmed.
- Teams and educationNo extra team platform fee
- Members can use different tiers and a shared paid wallet. SSO needs at least one paid member. Enterprise is quoted with order-specific terms. Eligible teachers and students can apply for $10/month Megawatt with $10 model usage and 45,000 small-orb minutes. This is a separate conditional offer, not the normal $20 model allowance or a free trial. Hardware, taxes and outside service bills remain separate.
USD. No account, provider login, payment, cloud task or model call was tested. My Club lists platform plans only; add actual extra usage separately. Check supported subscription routes and the current bill before connecting a plan.

Try something small.
- Explain a small project before making changes
- Fix a bug and inspect the proposed code
- Keep separate software tasks in separate workspaces
Getting started.
Start with a public sample or a harmless project copy. Choose how models and compute will be paid for before starting. Amp runs tools without per-step approval by default; use isolation and a configured policy for access control. A private GitHub connection can let it clone and push as you. Archive the cloud thread when you finish to stop its computer.
Amp engineer Thorsten Ball shows an internal bug-fix, code-review and rollout-checking workflow in the homepage recording. This is a first-party engineering account, not our test or independent evidence of speed. A request to only read files does not enforce tool permissions. Opening a cloud thread can wake its computer and start billing.
Explain one public sample.
Try this task
- You’ll need
- An Amp account, a harmless public sample and a checked model and compute budget. Use an isolated workspace and the documented tool policy; default tool access does not ask each time.
- A request to copy
Explain this small sample project and identify one file worth reading first. Do not change files, run commands, install packages, connect accounts or publish anything. Tell me what you cannot establish from the files.
- What to expect
- A short explanation to compare with the sample files.
- How to check it is done
- Review activity for edits, commands and network use. Inspect model and compute charges, then archive the cloud thread to stop its computer.
Suggested first task, not our hands-on Amp result. A prompt is not an enforced permission rule. Reading in an awake cloud workspace can still cost money.
