Aider.

Work on your code together, in the terminal.

Aider reads a code project and helps you make changes from a terminal chat. It can update several files and record changes in Git, so a developer can inspect the work.

Getting started: TechnicalInstall a terminal tool, open a Git project and configure a model provider or local runtime. You need to review code and understand the running costs. Our setup guide, not a performance score.

Good for

Developers who prefer terminal work and want to choose their own model service or local runtime.

Start with

A computer, terminal, Git project and configured model access. Installation methods have different Python requirements; use the current official guide.

Cost

The Apache-licensed software is free. Hosted model calls, optional tools and hosting have their own bills. A local model also needs suitable hardware. No included universal model allowance or Aider subscription was confirmed.

Plans and limits explained

Free software. Choose how the AI runs.

Free software
Apache 2.0 software is free. It includes no universal hosted-model credits or message quota. Local models need suitable hardware.
Free trial
No separate Aider-wide free trial was confirmed. Any provider trial, allowance or card requirement belongs to that provider.
Paid plans
No paid Aider subscription or annual bill was confirmed on the official homepage, license, FAQ or model guides. A standalone Aider pricing page was not found.
Extra costs & limits
Hosted model usage, optional tools and hosting can cost extra. Architect mode uses two model roles. Consumer chat subscriptions are not automatically API credits. Check the supported provider access and billing route.

Prices in USD unless noted. Check the billing period; local prices, taxes and offers can differ.

Plan details

No separate Aider pricing page or paid Aider subscription was found. The license and model guides explain the split between the tool and its running costs.

Aider software$0
Free under Apache 2.0. Installing the tool does not include a fixed number of hosted messages or free model credits.
Hosted modelsYour provider bill
The chosen provider sets prices, quotas, card rules and any trial. Consumer chat subscriptions are not automatically API credits. Check the supported access route before relying on one.
Local modelsHardware and running costs
Supported local runtimes can avoid hosted token charges. Your computer still needs enough memory and processing power for the chosen model.
Larger tasksUsage can grow
Long file context and repeated edits can use more model tokens. Architect mode uses a planning model and an editing model, so both can contribute to the bill.

No Aider-wide free trial, card requirement, renewal schedule or annual bill is assumed. Those depend on any paid provider or hosting you choose. My Club’s $0 option covers software only; add your real running costs separately.

Try something small.

  • Ask how a small project works
  • Change a feature across related files
  • Review a patch before keeping it

Getting started.

Follow the official install guide, open a small Git project and choose a supported model provider. Check its billing first. Start in Ask mode with sample files before allowing edits.

Normal Code mode edits files; Ask mode is for discussion. Free software does not make every model free. Some homepage model recommendations are old. Check current provider access and review changes before running or publishing them.

Understand a small sample project.

Try this task
You’ll need
An installed Aider setup, configured model access and a small sample Git project. Select the persistent Ask chat mode first.
A request to copy

Explain what this sample project does. Identify its entry file and describe one function in plain English. Discuss only: do not edit files or run commands.

What to expect
An explanation you can compare with the sample files.
How to check it is done
Check the named files and function yourself. Confirm that no files changed. Check any model usage charge.

Our untested suggestion based on the official Ask-mode guide. A model request can still cost money. We have not installed Aider or run this task.

Our suggested prompt, based on the linked source. We haven’t tested this task ourselves.
